The pretty village of Cruden Bay is situated on the north east coast of Scotland, approximately twenty-three miles north of the city of Aberdeen and eight miles south of the town of Peterhead. The eighteen hole Championship course at Cruden Bay Golf Club offers a world renowned traditional links experience, set amongst a magnificent dune-scape and beautifully framed by long golden beaches and the North Sea. The club also plays host to a wonderful nine hole track named, 'St Olaf Course'. Cruden Bay Golf Club has fantastic practice facilities, which are open to visitors. Featuring a spacious clubhouse, a warm welcome to visitors coming from across the world and closer to home, Cruden Bay is a stunning venue to play golf in Scotland.
History: There is evidence, in the form of a ballot box inscribed 'Cruden Golf Club 1791', that a nine-hole golf course existed long before the layout of today’s links course. It may have been located at the Ward Hill, near Slains Castle, and indeed the Cruden Bay Golf Club of today has in its possession a winner’s medal from a competition played on the Ward Hill dated 1883. However, the eighteen hole links course at Cruden Bay was commissioned in 1894 by the Great North of Scotland Railway Company and fully opened in 1899 as part of the recreational facilities offered by the Cruden Bay Hotel, newly erected and opened in the same year. The course was designed by Old Tom Morris of St Andrews, with help from Archie Simpson. The inner nine hole “ladies course” was also laid out at the same time.
The Cruden Bay Golf Club was formed around 1900, with the first Captain being the Rev. B. Alcock. In 1926, the course was redesigned to the current layout by Tom Simpson and Herbert Fowler, although many of Tom Morris’s original greens and basic routing of the course are still in evidence. They also redesigned the St Olaf course which was opened at the same time. In the more recent past, small alterations have been made to the course, such as the addition of new bunkers and tees, and it has been lengthened to its current yardage.
Cruden Bay Championship Course: The course offers an internationally famous golfing experience – old fashioned links golf at its best – on one of the best links courses in Scotland. Creating unique challenges demanding the skills of power, placement and fine judgement, the course offers an excellent golfing test. With subtly contoured greens and a layout set against a backdrop of magnificent panoramic views, the course truly justifies the accolades it receives. And the accolades are many, with Cruden Bay often featuring amongst the world's, and the UK and Ireland's top 100 courses. The Championship Course at Cruden Bay Golf Club is an eighteen hole, par 70 (men), par 71/ 73 (women), track. It has tees ranging from 5,320 to 6,609 yards.
SGB Signature Hole: Hole 3. Measuring 252 yards (W) and 268 or 367 yards (M) from the tee, this short par 4 is everything a great risk and reward hole should be. The tee shot is played blind, with a small wooden post marking the direction to the green. Played from the forward tees, this hole is reachable with a favourable wind, but with the fairway narrowing as it approaches the green, trouble to the right, and a strategically placed bunker sitting to the middle-left of the green, it may be more sensible to lay up, for a short iron second shot into the green. Depending on planning and execution, a birdie chance hole can easily see a golfer carding a bogey or worse. Walking down the fairway, towards the green offers spine-tingling views of Port Erroll, and the ruins of Slains Castle, which was believed to be the inspiration for Bram Stoker's 1897 novel, 'Dracula'.
St Olaf Course: The nine hole St Olaf, is a true links course and represents Scottish golf at its best. It has beautifully shaped greens, offers blind shots and is set amongst a vast dune-scape. The North Sea breeze adds to its challenge, while the views are exceptional. Visitors can play the course for free on the day, the day before or the day after a game on the Championship Course. The St Olaf is a nine hole, par 32 (men), par 34 (women), track. It has tees ranging from 2,346 to 2,463 yards. This magnificent links in miniature can be played twice, becoming a par 64 (men), par 68 (women), with tees ranging from 4,692 to 4,926 yards.
