Prestwick St Nicholas sits in prime position on the shores of The Firth of Clyde. It is the world’s 26th oldest golf club and the course is a fabulous challenge. Prestwick St Nicholas occupies traditional links land, alongside some of its more illustrious neighbours. Old Tom Morris, winner of four Open Championships and legendary course designer, was a founding/honorary member of the club.
The splendid clubhouse sits yards from the shoreline and the finely manicured fairways offer year-round golf, on a firm and generally frost-free course. Prestwick St Nicholas is playable when many others are not.
The deep bunkers, running fairways, undulating greens and gorse bushes test the golfing skills of all abilities, and at 6,044 yards in length, this par 69 course is a must play whilst in Ayrshire.
It would be fair to say that nature's hazards, strategically placed bunkers and with “Out of Bounds” being a feature on at least twelve holes, this course is one which favours the thinking golfer, rather than the long, wild hitter.
The Ladies St Nicholas Golf Club was formed in 1893 and is one of the oldest ladies’ clubs in the country. The club played an instrumental part in the formation of the Scottish Ladies Golfing Association in 1904. This inclusive club was ahead of its time.
Two unusual features are encountered when on the golf course. Firstly, the “Salt Pan” buildings behind the 1st green. The latest in a series of workings dating back to the 15th century. The current buildings were constructed circa 1790, for the purpose of extracting salt from sea water. The second unusual feature is the flooded quarry which lies between the 7th and 8th holes. The quarry supplied stone for houses in the area, but operations ceased in 1870. Despite the quarry only being fifty metres from the sea, the water within it is fresh and is utilised in the course’s irrigation system. The flooded quarry is home to many wild birds - you will frequently see swans, ducks, oyster catchers, herons and grebe.
A Scottish Golf Break including a visit to Prestwick St Nicholas will live long in the memory.
