History: The West Kilbride Golf Club was formed in March 1893. The famous Professional 'Old' Tom Morris, of St Andrews, was called in to survey the land and declared it excellent for the purpose. The course was originally a nine hole layout and it did not increase to eighteen holes until 1905. From the outset, the club had multiple landlords, which worked against it acquiring ownership of the course. This caused the club considerable concern in subsequent years.
From the beginning, there had been a flourishing Ladies’ section and it was one of their number who first put the club on the national map. Jean McCulloch won the Scottish Ladies’ Championship in 1913, while still in her teens. It was the start of an astonishing career which would see her National Champion twice more, and win the West of Scotland Championship forty years after her first National success.
Over the years, the club has produced a number of excellent golfers and has played host to many important Championships – the British Girls’, the Pringle Seniors’, the British Senior Ladies’, the Scottish Girls’, the Scottish Ladies’, the Scottish Boys’ and the World One Armed Golfers Championship. More recently, The West Kilbride Golf Club is proud to have hosted the 2023 R&A Senior's Home Internationals.
The Golf Course: A championship links, situated on a narrow coastal strip, bordered on one side by agricultural land and on the other by the beach, the course at The West Kilbride Golf Club offers spectacular views across the Firth of Clyde to the beautiful island of Arran, and a fantastic golfing challenge. The course follows an anti-clockwise route with a loop at the far end, and out of bounds features across twelve of its eighteen holes. A flattish layout peppered with undulations, the course is exposed to the slightest sea breezes and strongest winds, predominately emanating from the South West & North West. On a windy day, it will offer a links golf experience at its most demanding, while on a benign day it still favours straight hitters. Benefitting from its position on Scotland's West Coast, and blessed with mild winter weather, the course is usually playable all year round. The West Kilbride Golf Club hosts an eighteen hole, par 71 (men), par 74 (women), course. It has tees ranging from 5,781 to 6,146 yards.
SGB Signature Hole: Name: Hunger Em Oot. Number: Hole 16. Measuring 355 yards (M) and 261 yards (W) this beautiful par 4 is played all the way along the coast towards a small white-washed cottage, which sits to the left of its green. Roughly translating to 'starve them out' and presumably relating to historical actions of a land-owner towards previous inhabitants of the cottage, its name certainly adds further drama to this magnificent hole. History aside, a good drive down the left hand side of the fairway is required to cross the burn at its nearest point, and to avoid the fairway bunkers, the wall and the out of bounds running tight down the right hand side of the hole. The approach shot is seemingly simple, however, the putting surface is guarded by two bunkers to the left, one front-right and by the out of bounds wall all the way along its right flank. The green has subtle breaks throughout and there are no easy two putts on this hole. Natural beauty, historical tragedy and present jeopardy are all wrapped up in one golfing hole. What else can you ask for? A fantastic golf hole, on an amazing stretch of the course.
