Situated in Scotland's northeast, the coastal town of Lossiemouth, often referred to as ‘the jewel of the Moray Firth’, is home to Moray Golf Club. Famed for its sandy beaches and dune-scapes, the town is approximately forty miles east of Inverness and seventy miles northwest of Aberdeen. Moray Golf Club is blessed to have two fabulous eighteen hole courses. The Old Course is considered one of the finest links in Scotland, while the New Course, somewhat tighter in its design, and hosting smaller greens, provides an equally stern test with an emphasis on accuracy. With excellent practice facilities, a warm welcome, Speyside whisky aplenty and great food on offer Moray Golf Club is a fantastic venue to play golf in Scotland.
History: Moray Golf Club was founded in 1889 and formally opened on the 30th March of that year. The Old Course was laid out by Old Tom Morris, who became a frequent visitor and played a number of exhibition matches in the early years. From its infancy, the club had a large women's section and in 1905 they had their own nine-hole course laid out. During these early years, the membership included a number of distillers. The effects of their vision and foresight continue to be enjoyed by members and visitors to the present day. These distiller members had been laying down whisky since the formation of the club, and in 1900 the club purchased one hogshead (54 Imperial gallons) of Glen Grant 1894 whisky, one of 1897, and two of 1900. Glen Grant continued to be the "club malt" until 1992 when the club changed to "Macallan", having laid down hogsheads of Macallan some years previously. In 2002 the club laid down a number of years worth of whisky with the local Glen Moray Distillery. While today, the club now has its own whisky. The New Course, created by Sir Henry Cotton opened in 1979, and incorporated the nine-holes from the original Ladies course into its design.
The Old Course: The Old Course is considered to be one of the finest links courses in Scotland. A classic links designed by Old Tom Morris with deep revetted bunkers, undulating gorse lined fairways and smooth, fast running greens, it is a superb test of golf. With seven par fours over 400 yards in length and stunning views across the Moray Firth it truly is a jewel of a golf course. The Old Course at Moray Golf Club is an eighteen hole, par 71 (men), par 76 (women), track. It has tees ranging from 6,078 to 6,572 yards. Golf Scotland. Golf Moray.
SGB Signature Hole: Name: Home. Number: Hole 18. Measuring 373 yards (W) and 408 yards (M) from the tee, this fantastic par 4 is one of the best finishing holes to be found in Scotland. With a number houses set back on the hillside to your right, the tee shot has the feel of playing in front of a grandstand. A stone wall running tight to the right of the tee box, intensifies the feeling of being hemmed in. However, a good drive opens up the fairway and offers a magnificent opportunity to play your second shot into a plateau green, set within a natural amphitheatre below the clubhouse. Avoid the notorious Hell's Bunker at the front of the green, and enjoy your splendid walk towards the clubhouse and the town. Find it, and all sorts of trouble awaits. A visually superb final hole, with card wrecking jeopardy built in.
The New Course: Henry Cotton's preference for precision golf can be seen on the shorter but somewhat tighter New Course. With smaller greens than the Old Course, it is every bit as good, and equally challenging and rewarding. When this is a club's second course, you just have to admit that they are spoiled for choice. The New Course is an eighteen hole, par 70 (men), par 72 (women), track. It has tees ranging from 5,225 to 6,068 yards.
