Panmure Golf Club

Situated on the Angus coast, only ten miles from the city of Dundee, two miles from Carnoustie, and a one hour & twenty minute drive from Edinburgh International Airport, the small seaside village of Barry is home to the truly wonderful Panmure Golf Club. Recognised as the 21st oldest golf club in the world, Panmure is steeped in history and offers an incredible visitor experience. Featuring a world renowned course, an iconic clubhouse, fantastic practice facilities and extending the warmest of welcomes to visitors coming from across the world and closer to home, Panmure Golf Club is a magnificent venue to visit, while playing golf in Scotland.

History: Games of golf have played over the links at Panmure for a very long time. In 1527, it was reported in the Registrum de Panmure that Sir Robert Maule “exerciset the gowf, and oftymes past to Barry lynkes”. Formed in 1845, Panmure is recognised as one of the oldest golf clubs in the world, and was one of the twenty-four clubs that originally helped purchase the Amateur Championship trophy, first played for in 1885. Panmure Golf Club originally played on Monifieth Golf Course, along with a number of other clubs, but due to overcrowding, it moved to its present site at Barry in 1899.

Over the years, the links has been modified and lengthened with several of the holes according to suggestions proposed by James Braid in 1922. The last major change was to re-site the 14th green (from what is now used as a winter tee for the 15th), producing a far more interesting and challenging hole.

The Panmure links has been acknowledged several times over the years, with many significant competitions being staged at the course including national amateur tournaments, in addition to final qualifying for the Open Championship. In 2019, the course hosted regional qualifying for the Open Championship and the R&A Girls amateur Championship.

Harry Vardon, Ted Rae, James Braid, Tommy Armour, Henry Cotton, Roberto de Vicenzo, Sandy Lyle and Padraig Harrington are just some of the past Open Champions to have competed in earnest over our links. Others like Gary Player, Nick Faldo and Dustin Johnston have visited and simply played for fun.

Essence: “Golf as it was meant to be” At Panmure Golf Club, tradition is not simply remembered, it’s lived. Established in 1845 and shaped by icons of the game, Panmure stands as a guardian of golf’s original spirit, authentic, timeless, and beautifully understated. Every hole echoes the legacy of Old Tom Morris and James Braid, every challenge recalls the meticulous preparation of Ben Hogan. Played across firm fescue turf within a natural, unspoiled landscape, Panmure rewards strategy, precision, and respect for the game. Visitors are welcomed as members for the day, immersed in a culture of quiet excellence and genuine hospitality. More than a course, Panmure is an experience: a rare opportunity to enjoy golf as it was meant to be.

The Panmure Links: Rich in heritage and tradition, the course is considered by many to be among the finest in the country. The famous Old Tom Morris and James Braid designed links requires both strategy and skill to navigate and negotiate the sandhills forged by nature. The course combines the best elements of links and heathland, with tight fairways, challenging carries and undulating greens. The texture of heather, pines, dunes and fescue intertwine to produce a landscape which screams firm, fast and handsome golf. The Panmure Links is an eighteen hole, par 70 (men), par 74 (women), course. It has tees ranging from 5,684 to 6,551 yards.

SGB Signature Hole: Name: Hogan. Number: Hole 6. Measuring 231 yards (front) and 414 yards (back) from the tee, this long and narrow, dog-leg left, par 4 is considered one of the finest in the United Kingdom. A blind double fairway awaits a conservative tee shot, leaving a very demanding long second shot to a small, raised target. The more aggressive tee shot to the narrow and undulating fairway offers a better chance to find the green. However, if the drive is not accurate, players are best advised to chip their second shot further down the fairway, leaving a short iron into the green. At all costs, try and avoid the famous “Hogan bunker” at the front right of the green.. A five here is by no means a disaster, but tempting fate by attempting the miracle second shot often leads to a high number. An absolutely magnificent golf hole hole and rated at stroke index 1. it’s as tough as they come.

Clubhouse, Professional shop & Practice facilities: No visit to Panmure Golf Club is complete without time spent in the iconic and unique clubhouse. The clubhouse is one of the finest old golf buildings in Scotland, it’s atmospheric lounges are full of character and historic style. This exceptional building was modelled, both architecturally and spiritually, on Royal Calcutta Golf Club. The clubhouse offers a varied range of dining options, with friendly and attentive staff presenting good food and wine to complete your day, (see food and dining section). The uniquely charming lounges provide three different dress code options (the full dress code is available on the club website). The 19th hole is a casual bar, perfect for a post round beverage, with Kümmel or a great Scottish malt, always ready to be poured. The Hogan lounge is smart casual and it is where the club’s trophy cabinet is on view, with a number of prizes dating from 1845 and finally, the formal dining area, the Dalhousie room requires visitors to wear a jacket and tie. For the convenience of visiting guests, the recently renovated visitor changing room, including clothing lockers and shower facilities are at your disposal. Professional shop: The club has a fully stocked professional shop offering a wide selection of clothing, accessories & gifts carrying the famous club crest, and the leading brands in golf clubs and golf equipment, while also catering to your day-to-day golfing needs. Buggy & Trolley hire options, and Caddie services are also available. Practice facilities: Panmure Golf Club offers complimentary use of their excellent practice facilities to visiting golfers.
