Machrihanish is one of the most remote and rugged links courses in Scotland. The Championship course is located five miles West of Campbeltown, the United Kingdom's most westerly town. The Club was formed in 1876, and a ladies' section followed soon after in 1890. The initial layout was over 10 holes, and games were played according to the rules laid out by Prestwick Golf Club. The course was subsequently extended to 12 holes, and Old Tom Morris extended it further to an 18-hole layout, in 1879.
The course is a traditional out-and-back links. It wraps around Machrihanish Beach, heading out away from the village, before turning back for home at the halfway mark. The course is a playable, enjoyable, and balanced mix of dramatic and subtly compelling holes. This world class links, crafted by, "The Almighty” as Old Tom Morris remarked, is mostly characterised by rolling dunes and marvellous green sites. The course is a wonderful journey from start to finish. Often described as spiritual, Machrihanish is a love affair of sport and nature - challenging but fair, charming, and thrilling. Golf as it was intended to be.
The course distance can range from 5,196 to 6,226 yards. Machrihanish plays at par 70 from the regular tees. The course features, four par threes, twelve par fours and just two par fives, which both appear early in the back nine. Like many traditional courses, there are some wonderfully named holes, paying homage to its location, history and heritage. On the Outward nine you will play through “Islay” and “Jura”, the third and fourth holes, with the Inner Hebridean Islands, after which the holes are named, being visible on a clear day.
However, the star of the show at Macrihanish Golf Club is the first hole, “Battery”. It offers one of the most exhilarating opening tee shots in world golf. A shot played over the corner of the beach. The hole is a testing 424 yards, and If you play the tee shot safe, then you have a long way to go for the second. However, if you go for it, well, your ball just might end up bobbing along in the Hudson River (New York), in a few months time.
How will you fair against Battery?
Jack Nicklaus described the first at Machrihanish as, “The best opening hole of golf in the world”. And, who are we to argue with the Golden Bear?
