A traditional links course where you can test if your game is Open Championship ready.
Glasgow Golf Club, one of the world's oldest golf clubs, was founded in 1787. Initially, the members played at Glasgow Green and subsequently Queen’s Park and Alexandra Park. At that time, all three areas were owned and managed by Glasgow Corporation and were open to any citizens of Glasgow. As the popularity of the game grew in the early 1890s and the Alexandra Park course became evermore crowded, the members started looking for suitable ground in Ayrshire to establish a course. Their aims were that it would complement the city course, be a course which they themselves controlled and managed, and would allow for year-round golf.
An agreement was struck with the Duke of Portland and an initial lease was made for land on the Gailes. Gailes Links was officially opened on 19th May 1892. The Captain, John Risk, played the first ball with a driver made from beech wood taken from Golfhill Estate in Glasgow, which was adjacent to Alexandra Park.
In 1912, Willie Park Jnr, who had won The Open Championship in 1887 and 1889, and Tulloch, the club professional, combined their talents to re-design the course's layout. Park always believed Gailes to be one of his finest creations. Apart from increasing its length, over the years, to today’s 6,903 yards, from the championship tees, Gailes remains largely as he envisaged it. The course he created is one that provides plenty of challenges. These come in the form of pot bunkers, abundant gorse, heather, tight fairways, out of bounds and of course the wind. The course enjoys undulating greens and firm fairways, and given its wonderful location at the tip of Ayrshire’s links land, it is playable all year-round. At the end of a round, we recommend taking some time to relax in the comfort of the clubhouse or the outdoor terrace overlooking the course.
The practice range at Gailes Links is just a short walk from the clubhouse and professional shop. It features a full grass tee off area, premium balls, a bunker area and a putting green.
Gailes Links has hosted thirty-two International competitions since 1927 and was an Open Championship Qualifying course from 2014 to 2017. Scottish Golf Breaks invites you to see if your game is Open Championship ready.
