Machrihanish Dunes, known as The Dunes, is one of Scotland's best-kept secrets. Located on the Kintyre peninsula, one of Argyll's most secluded outposts, it contains unspoiled terrains and a variety of wildlife. There are miles of gorgeous coastline, beautiful rolling hills and wooded landscapes. The Dunes has won numerous awards in its short existence, such as Resort Hotel of the Year and Outstanding Commitment to Sustainable Golf. Its annual appearance in the top one hundred Golf resorts, and, top one hundred Courses in Great Britain, highlight its continued focus on the full resort experience.
Machrihanish Dunes was created in 2009. It is the first links course in this part of the country to be built in over a century. The course is adjacent to Machrihanish Golf Club and forms part of “The village at Machrihanish Dunes”. The village includes The Ugadale Hotel, cottages and The Old Clubhouse Pub, all of which are within easy reach of the course. Moreover, the company behind the resort provide accommodation in Campbeltown at The Royal Hotel, which they have lovingly restored to its prior glory.
The Ugadale Hotel offers a large selection of accommodation, across a variety of guest rooms and suites. There are three types of guest rooms to choose from, classic, classic deluxe and superior. In addition, there are two suite types to choose from, the mini suite and suite. The Kintyre Restaurant & Bar offers a warm and inviting atmosphere, and an exceptional dining experience. The Kintyre offers the finest elements of a refined steakhouse, while the more casual bar provides a wide range of comfort food favourites. In addition to the guest rooms at The Ugadale Hotel, there are eight wonderfully appointed cottages, which offer two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a working fireplace. The Royal hotel in Campbeltown has twenty-eight rooms, offering classic and superior accommodation. There is free shuttle service from The Royal Hotel to The Dunes and Campbeltown Airport. Kintyre is surprisingly accessible by air, sea, or land. It is secluded but not remote.
The course was designed by David McLay Kidd. His reputation as a master links craftsman is on display throughout a round at The Dunes. Since creating The Dunes, Kidd has received international acclaim for many other designs, including his layout of The Castle Course at St. Andrews. Kidd states of his creation at The Dunes, “To historians of the game Machrihanish Dunes may give us an insight into how golf looked and felt to my Scottish forebears centuries ago. Our intention was to create a course as ‘Old Tom’ would have done in centuries past”.
Machrihanish Dunes is the only Scottish course, thus far, to have been created on a site of special scientific interest. To protect the pristine coastal environment and in order to preserve the unmatched natural beauty of the site, the course was built and is maintained with the lightest possible touch. The course is laid out over two hundred and fifty-nine acres, only seven of which were disturbed during its construction. Its routing, the positioning of its tees and its greens, are dictated by the lay of the land. The course distance can range from 5,076 to 7,082 yards. This wonderful 18-hole links course flows effortlessly towards the sea, along its coastline and back again. Machrihanish Dunes invites you to step back in time and Scottish Golf Breaks invites you to play on a course that is at one with nature.
