Dumfries and Galloway

Every Scottish golf break should include a visit to Dumfries and Galloway, the third largest geographical region in Scotland. Encompassing a vast and rugged coastline, notorious in the past for smugglers who engaged in the 'free trade', the hills, mountains and forests of the Southern Uplands, where Scotland's first dark sky park is located, historically important towns, such as Dumfries and Stranraer, wonderful countryside and numerous inland and coastal villages, the area offers visiting golfers fantastic playing opportunities on top class links and parkland courses. The town of Dumfries acts as an excellent base to travel deep and wide across the region, and boasts some fantastic accommodation options, hostelries, retail outlets and restaurants. Dumfries and Galloway is home to numerous fantastic golf courses such as those at Southerness Golf Club, a truly stunning championship links located on the Solway Firth, Dumfries and County Golf Club, a wonderful parkland course on the town's outskirts, bordered by the River Nith, and Powfoot Golf Club, which offers a tremendous mixture of high quality parkland and links golf. All of these locations host tremendous courses in glorious surroundings, and provide a fantastic standard of hospitality. Whilst many a hidden gem, nestling in or close to a town or village across Dumfries and Galloway, or even over the English border, await your arrival. These include Portpatrick- Dunskey Golf Club, Stranraer Golf Club, Wigtonshire County Golf Club and on the English side of the Solway Firth, the magnificent links at Silloth on Solway Golf Club. Dumfries and Galloway is well served by a number of excellent hotels, restaurants, retail outlets, and with good links to domestic and international transport hubs. (Rail, road, ferry and flight). From the town of Dumfries, the train journey to Glasgow city centre is 1 hr 50 minutes, while Glasgow International Airport is a 1 hr 30 minutes drive. The M6 and M74 motorways, two of the main routes North and South between England and Scotland, are within a 30 minute drive of the town. Whilst Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland, and its international Airport are located a 2 hour drive away. The International Airport in the English city of Newcastle is a 1 hr 50 minutes drive from Dumfries. Excellent ferry links form Belfast and Larne to Cairnryan in Dumfries and Galloway make the area inviting and easily accessible for those travelling from Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland.
