History: The course at Dumfries and County Golf Club is an early twentieth century creation. The County, as the club is known, was established in May 1912. For the design of the course the club approached famous golfer, Willie Fernie, who had a close association with the town. When Fernie laid out the course, he was attached to Royal Troon Golf Club and his architectural pedigree included significant input at Troon, Turnberry and The Old Course at St Andrews. Fernie planned the course, on land purchased from the Nunfield Estate, in two distinct loops, both starting and finishing at the clubhouse. In the late 1920s, the celebrated golfer, five-time Open Champion and noted golf course architect, James Braid, suggested a radical overhaul of the course, removing many hedges and ditches, and replacing these with his trademark bunkers. Following the Second World War, further land was purchased from the Nunfield Estate to allow for minor course re-design and expansion. In the 1960s, land was purchased from the adjoining Dalscone Estate and the course was further expanded to its present-day incarnation. The same decade saw an ambitious and extensive tree planting programme, precipitating the fine and challenging tree-lined picture that the County presents today. Some far-sighted planning in the 1990s focused on a programme of re-laying all the greens to USGA standards. As a result, the greens at Dumfries and County are as good as will be found anywhere and, indeed, are the envy of many.

The course at Dumfries and County: A tricky championship parkland venue, set over two cleverly designed loops of nine holes, both finishing at the clubhouse, and played over a mature tree-lined landscape, in the beautiful Nith Valley, the course at Dumfries and County Golf Club requires excellent game management. With immaculate and tight fairways, an undulating layout, dog-leg holes, blind shots, and with true and fast running USGA standard greens the course will challenge and delight visitors who play it. The club and course have played host to a number of championship events including the British Youths Championships, the Scottish Girls Championship and the British Senior Ladies Championship. The course at Dumfries and County Golf Club is an eighteen hole, par 69 (men), par 72 (women), track. It has tees ranging from 5,420 to 5,925 yards.

SGB Signature Hole: Name: The Rhodies. Number: Hole 16. Measuring 201 yards (M) and 179 yards (W) this cracking par 3 is played along a tree-lined chute, that narrows as it nears an elevated green. Guarded by three considerably sized bunkers, one front right, another to the left and a third to the right, and mature trees to the rear, the green seems a small target from the tee box. There is a little apron, to the front, for balls that come up short, but the smart option is to land your tee shot directly on the green, avoiding all of the potential trouble this hole has to offer. A fantastic par 3 requiring a great shot from the tee.
