Located on cliffs overlooking St Andrews Bay, The Fairmont St Andrews, a hotel set over only four floors, subtly blends into its environment. The Fairmont features two hundred and nine rooms and all the amenities you’d except from a five-star resort. It hosts two magnificent golf courses, The Torrance and The Kittocks, an award winning spa and five restaurants, offering a diverse range of cuisine.
The Fairmont offers a large selection of accommodation; including a variety of guest rooms, multiple suites and villas. There are a range of guest rooms, all of similar size, but with differing views, many of which provide stunning vistas of the golf courses, the coast-line and the historic skyline of St Andrews. Hotel suites on offer range from a Junior up to the Kingdom of Fife suite. While, the villas are perfect for a Scottish Golf Break, with abundant space for up to eight guests. All residents at the hotel can utilise the facilities including bars and restaurants, and receive complimentary access to the Fairmont Spa.
The Fairmont offers a host of dining venues. Whether it’s a light-bite or fine dining, there are fantastic options within the hotel. These include The Zephyr Sports Bar which serves light fare, in a relaxed atmosphere, where you can have a drink at the bar and watch how the professional golfers do it on multiple TV screens. The Squire Restaurant specialises in British cuisine. The Squire is where you will enjoy breakfast on one of our Scottish Golf Breaks. While, at The St Andrews Bar & Grill, with its stunning panoramic views over the two championship golf courses, they pride themselves on sourcing local, seasonal produce from surrounding farms and suppliers. It features a seafood bar, offering fresh lobster from the St Andrews Bay and a Josper Grill, serving a large selection of Scottish steaks.
The wellness facilities at the resort are exceptional. The hotel boasts a sixteen metre swimming pool (indoor & heated), a sauna, a steam room and a jacuzzi. The energetic can enjoy a generous fitness centre which includes all of the latest cardio equipment, and which offers fitness and yoga classes. The luxury Spa offers an inspired collection of personalised treatments from world-renowned spa experts, ESPA. The Spa has ten luxurious treatment rooms and offers a place to relax and unwind after a hard day on the championship courses.
The Torrance, designed by the legendary Scottish Golfer Sam Torrance opened in 2001. The course is a par 72 and measures 7,230 yards. It has played host to numerous high-profile events, such as The Open Qualifying in 2010, Senior European Tour events and most recently The Scottish Championship in 2020. The front nine weaves its way from the hotel before the course opens up to the elements on the back nine, where stunning views are to be found in every direction. The 17th is a treacherous Par 3. At 220 yards, it has multiple challenges including, deep bunkers, thick rough and a traditional dry stone wall. When these challenges are combined with wind direction and strength it is a potential card wrecker, so close to home. How will you fair against Big Sam’s signature hole?
The Kittocks, designed by Bruce Devlin with assistance from Gene Sarazen also opened in 2001. The Par 72 measures 7,230 yards. It is a wonderful meandering course, with views of rolling hills, abundant farmland, and down to the rocky and rugged North-sea coastline. The Kittocks makes wonderful use of the natural terrain, while the use of traditional stone walling around the course adds to its visual layout. The 17th hole is wonderful par 4 which is full of danger. There is trouble on both sides, including gorse, bunkers and a cliff edge to the right. A large part of the fairway skirts alongside this steep cliff, and asks you to think strategically about your shot...lay up short, bail out left or go for it…What will you do? However, at Scottish Golf Breaks our favourite hole on the course is the 7th. At 430 yards it runs downhill alongside the coastal trail, is visually stunning and features three steep bunkers, banked with traditional sleepers. The high tee box position begs you to get the driver out and that is exactly what we did on our last visit, all hitting balls over 300 yards on the sun baked links fairway. My friends, is there any better feeling in golf?
Practice facilities at the Fairmont are excellent. The driving range is wide, generous and includes grass tee offs. In addition, there is a large putting green, bunker and short game area to hone your skills.
